Hon log åt hans moraliska ifver. Jo, hon visste allt. Men hon ansåg sig
vara  pass gammal och erfaren att hon kunde läsa den utan att taga
skada till sin själ.

Herr Hedström såg fundersam ut. »Jag skulle aldrig tillåta att
Amalia...», sade han.

Fru Zimmerman läste långt ut  natten och hela dagen derpå. Hon gjorde
anteckningar  lösa pappersblad, nedskref allt som föll henne in,
gjorde utdrag och citat. Hon kände det som om denna bok var en fiende,
hon hade att bekämpa och hon måste samla en arsenal af vapen.

Men ju längre hon kom dess tydligare såg hon att alla de argument hon
kunde samla upp icke skulle förmå att i ringaste mån förändra eller
modifiera sonens mening. Från dessa blad slog der emot henne samma
trista, glädjelösa stämning, samma trötthet, samma brist  tro, samma
likgiltighet och samma kyla, som från hans eget väsen. Hon märkte den
omisskänneliga frändskapen mellan sin son och bokens författare.
