Falk höjde första glaset och drack -- för vem, det fick ingen veta, men
magistern trodde, att det var för dagens hjälte och drog därför fram med
verserna med detsamma samt började läsa till »Fritz Levin,  han blev
ordinarie».

Falk överfölls härvid av en svår hosta, vilken inverkade störande 
uppläsningen och tillintetgjorde verkan av de mest kvicka pointerna; men
Nyström, som var en klok man, hade förutsett detta och därför hade han
instuckit den lika vackert tänkta som sagda sanningen att »vart fan
skulle Fritz Levin ha farit, om icke Carl Nicolaus Falk hade varit».
Denna fina antydan  de många ficklånen, som Falk beviljat sin
ordinarie vän, gjorde att hostan gav sig och att man bättre kunde
uppfatta slutstrofen, som helt ogrannlaga dedicerades till Levin, vilket
missgrepp åter igen hotade att störa harmonien. Falk hällde i sig sitt
glas, liksom om han tömt en kalk bräddad av otacksamheten.

-- Du var inte  rolig i dag som du brukar, Nyström! sade han.

-- Nej, han var mycket roligare  din trettioåttonde födelsedag,
hjälpte Levin , som visste vart det skulle bära hän.
