Denna fina antydan på de många ficklånen, som Falk beviljat sin ordinarie vän, gjorde att hostan gav sig och att man bättre kunde uppfatta slutstrofen, som helt ogrannlaga dedicerades till Levin, vilket missgrepp åter igen hotade att störa harmonien. Falk hällde i sig sitt glas, liksom om han tömt en kalk bräddad av otacksamheten. -- Du var inte så rolig i dag som du brukar, Nyström! sade han. -- Nej, han var mycket roligare på din trettioåttonde födelsedag, hjälpte Levin på, som visste vart det skulle bära hän.
