-- Vad är det här? sade Agnes skrattande i det hon öppnade skrinet och
framtog en sexpipig revolver. -- Nej, se en sådan vacker unge; hade du
inte den där i Carl Moor? Jo, det hade du! Jag tror den är laddad!

Hon höjde revolvern, siktade mot sotluckan och tryckte av.

-- Stoppa nu in den där! sade hon; det är inte leksaker, mina vänner!

Rehnhjelm hade suttit mållös. Han förstod alltsammans, men han kunde
icke  fram ett ord, och han stod  under flickans förtrollning att
han icke en gång kunde leta fram några ovänliga känslor mot henne. Han
visste visserligen, att en kniv gått igenom hans hjärta, men smärtan
hade ännu icke haft tid att infinna sig.

Falander var dekontenanserad av  mycken fräckhet och behövde en stund
att hämta sig, sedan hela hans moraliska avrättningsscen misslyckats och
hans teaterkupp upplöst sig  ett för honom mindre gynnsamt sätt.

-- Ska vi inte  nu? sade Agnes och började ordna sitt hår framför
spegeln.

Falander öppnade dörren.

-- ! sade han, och tag min förbannelse med dig; du har förstört en
hederlig mans själafrid.
