som om han alldeles icke väntade något besök. Men en häftig sinnesoro
syntes sätta honom i verksamhet, ty han gick fram och åter  golvet och
stannade  och  bakom gardinen för att osedd kunna se utåt gatan.
Därpå gick han till spegeln, knäppte av sin krage och lade den ifrån sig

fruntimmersfotografi från en visitbricka, lade den under ett ofantligt
förstoringsglas och betraktade den  som man betraktar ett
mikroskopiskt preparat. Han satt ganska länge vid detta arbete.  han
fick höra steg i trapporna, grävde han hastigt ner fotografien där han
tagit den, sprang upp och satte sig vid skrivbordet , att han kom att
sitta med ryggen åt dörren. Han var i full sysselsättning med att
skriva,  en knackning -- två korta och svaga dubbelslag -- hördes 
dörren.

-- Stig in, ropade Falander med en röst, som icke lät inbjudande, utan
snarare lämpade sig för en utvisning.
