Han återgäldade den med en slyngelaktig grimas. Hammer satt ensam kvar. På hemvägen gick Tomas och tänkte på sina affärer. Var skulle han få pengar? Han hade bara några öre i portmonnän; det var icke ens så mycket att han kunde köpa en cigarr att röka efter middagen. Om en vecka skulle fadern komma hem från Tyskland; då måste han tala med honom. Det var tråkigt, men det kunde icke skjutas upp längre. Men hur skulle han bära sig åt för att få en cigarr? Att inte ha en cigarr att röka till kaffet ovanpå middagen, det var ungefär som att ha tandvärk. Han gick just förbi en cigarrbutik, där han brukade handla rätt ofta. Om han kunde gå in som vanligt och be om en cigarr och sedan låtsa som om han hade glömt sin portmonnä hemma... i fickan på en annan rock.
