Tomas kunde icke säga något; han stod röd av blygsel. Han tyckte sig
aldrig förr ha sett, hur vacker hon var, och likväl var hon mycket blek.

Ellen betraktade honom länge med en stel blick.

-- Kom in, sade hon slutligen lågt med en liten skälvning  rösten.

Lägenheten bestod av två små ljusa rum och ett kök. De blevo stående
mitt  golvet i det yttre rummet, och ingen av dem sade något.

-- Varför har du inte gått med din mor och din bror i kyrkan? frågade
Tomas äntligen lågt, med ett osäkert tonfall.

-- Jag har  ont i huvudet, klagade hon sakta, Han lade sin hand 
hennes panna. Den var brännhet.

Ellen brast i gråt.

-- Å, Tomas, snyftade hon, var har du varit  länge?

Han kunde icke svara något.

Hon drog honom ned  soffan, och hennes händer lekte i hans hår, och
hon snyftade alltjämt med huvudet mot hans bröst.

-- Var har du varit hela tiden, Tomas, du måste säga var du har varit...
