Det var häradshövding Ratsman; han såg fet och glad ut och hade en ljus halsduk, och han steg ombord på Lidingöbåten, just då den lade ut. Han bodde icke på Lidingön utan i Vaxholm, men han skulle väl hälsa på några bekanta... Tomas hade stannat framför en liten nedsotad, gammalmodigt byggd ångbåt. Den hette Utö, och den skulle avgå till Utö om en kvart. -- Utö... Det låter som om det skulle ligga allra längst ute vid havet... Han skrev några rader till modern och lämnade dem åt ett stadsbud, därefter gick han ombord. Det hade blåst upp en frisk östlig vind. Måsarna på strömmen skreko och larmade, seglade i vida kretsar fram och åter över vattnet, tindrande vita, sköto pilsnabbt ned mot vattenbrynet som lysande stjärnfall mitt på dagen och stego åter upp med något sprattlande och blankt i näbben. Ångvisslor skuro genom luften, slupar och farkoster av alla slag korsade
