Tomas och Märta följdes åt över Roslagstorg uppåt Johannes. De hade kommit överens om att gå upp i våningen vid Döbelnsgatan och fira midsommaraftonen med en flaska vin och några bakelser, som de skulle köpa under vägen. De vågade icke gå på ett konditori; man kunde ju aldrig vara säker på att icke bli sedd. Tomas stannade framför ett leksaksstånd på Roslagstorg. Han skulle köpa någon gengåva åt Märta. Slutligen bestämde han sig för en liten gris av guttaperka. Det var en särskild sorts gris: han hade ett hål i trynet, genom vilket man kunde låta honom suga upp vatten.
