Junidagarna runno snabbt som brokiga pärlor rinna av en silkestråd, och det blev midsommarafton. Tomas hade kommit sent upp. Kvällen förut hade han varit tillsammans med Wannberg och några andra kamrater, ätit sexa på Stallmästargården och svärmat omkring i Haga och Bellevue hela den ljusa sommarnatten. På hemvägen drog det upp till oväder och började ösregna; då följde han med Wannberg upp på hans rum, där de drucko sherry och spelade schack. Under tiden klarnade det åter upp, och morgonsolen slog bländande emot dem, då de släckte den osande lampan och rullade upp gardinen. Klockan blev sex, innan Tomas kom hem, och han fick icke sova mycket. Fram emot tolvtiden steg han upp och åt frukost. När han blev färdig, stoppade han en lärobok i fickan och gick ner i Humlegården.
