av rädslan att möjligen ha mässat efter ett felaktigt ritual. , han
hade i stället senare gottgjort alla i den vägen begångna
försummelser... Och åter var hans flyktiga tanke hos Märta. Brydde hon
sig något om honom eller icke? Och hur skulle han  veta det?
Framgången hade gjort honom företagsam, han ville ha snar visshet. Och
medan han med hastigt påtaget allvar besvarade hennes sista gäckande
inkast, sögo sig hans blickar fast vid den trånsjukt ristade linjen
mellan hennes blekröda läppar.

Champagnen kom. Professor Weber böjde sig fram och klingade mot glaset.
Han berömde fru Arvidsons hedrande vandel och utbragte hennes skål. Det
var mycket känsla i hans tal.

-- Titta  pappas nordstjärna, viskade Greta till Hall. Se,  den
lyser! Det är jag som har hand om den och håller den fin; jag har den
bland mina halsband och broscher. Först ville pappa ha den själv i sin
skrivbordslåda, men det fick han inte.
