Han stod redan utanför Mortimers dörr och hade just tryckt på knappen, då han plötsligt kände sig slagen av den enkla sanningen, att Mortimer naturligtvis icke kunde vara hemma; han var ju alltid på sitt ämbetsrum vid denna tid på dagen. Och han hade redan ringt, och det hördes steg i tamburen... Vad skulle han säga?
