Det stod ingenting om den i brevet, alltså hade hon först efteråt kommit att tänka på den. Slutligen satte han den för munnen och började tuta. Han kunde icke få mera än en enda ton ur den, en hes och falsk ton. Det hade nyss regnat ute. Gatorna lågo fuktiga och blanka, spräckliga av höstkvällens mörker och gasgnistornas ljus. Tomas var på väg nedåt järnvägen; han ville se, om han kunde uppfånga en skymt av Märta i något kupéfönster. Han gick och tänkte på slutorden i hennes brev, då han kom förbi ett litet konditori vid en sidogata, där han en gång för längesedan hade varit inne med Märta. Det var en afton i maj, och häggen hade nyss slagit ut... Han kunde icke hindra sig från att småle, då han just såg två unga människor komma över från den andra trottoaren, kasta skygga blickar omkring sig och därefter försvinna genom den smala dörren till konditoriet, hon före och han efter. Ja, nu var det de andras tur. För honom och Märta var leken slut.
