Hall följde grosshandlar Wenschen med en blick av livligt intresse, där han med några ansträngt viga skutt försvann i parkettrappan. Intubikaffet gled upp under ett dämpat förspel. -- Vem är det fru Wenschen sitter med i kväll? viskade en herre till en annan tätt bakom Tomas. Tomas gjorde våld på sig för att icke vända sig om. -- Jag vet inte säkert, det skall vara en fröken... Det skrällde till i orkestern. Den populäre barytonisten rullade in och började sjunga så mycket han orkade, klädd i sin gredelina kofta med uddar. Det var packat på Rydberg. Hall, Weber och Mortimer med fru och tant lyckades slutligen erövra en soffa längst inne i stora matsalen. Det yttre rummet var upptaget av ett veterinärmöte, som avslutade sina förhandlingar med en supé. En oavbruten ström av gäster och uppassare rörde sig fram och tillbaka genom salen. Man ropade, knuffades och svor mellan tänderna. Då och då hördes kraftiga hurrarop från veterinärmötet.
