Plötsligt stod hon mitt framför honom, men hon såg honom icke. Hon stod
upprätt och tyst och betraktade en vit Venusstod i ett hörn av en
undangömd boské. Det var en Venusstod i marmor,  vars fötter och ben,
ja högt upp  magen, vulgära människor klottrat sina vulgära namn till
åminnelse av en eller annan osande varm dag,  någon fullpackad
söndagsbåt med lövruskor fram och bak och falsk mässingsmusik ombord
fört dem hitut  lustresa att begapa och begrina resterna av deras
fäders, nej, deras fäders herrars glans. Bröstet och det stolta huvudet
skimrade vita, oberörda; dit hade barbarernas händer icke nått.

Nedanför växte gräset frodigt och mjukt.

Tomas smög ljudlöst bakom Märta, slingrade armarna om hennes midja,
kysste henne och tvingade henne ned  gräset.

Venusbilden stod leende och vit och tyst.
