stå och stirra sig blind  det.

Och han tillade lågt, liksom i tankar:

-- Nej, vita blommor och vita själar...

Tomas stod och skruvade  sig. Pastorn märkte det slutligen, och hans
ansikte återtog hastigt sitt vanliga uttryck.

-- Jag ser att du har bråttom, sade han småleende. Adjö, hälsa din far!

Och han gick långsamt bort och satte sig att drömma  en av sofforna,
mitt i det blida solskenet.

Tomas tog vägen genom en av de gränder, som föra ned till Roslagstorg.
Han var ännu förvånad. Pastor Caldén brukade icke vara sentimental...

I trätrapporna upp till Johannes' kyrkogård satt den svarta katten med
de vita framtassarna ännu  sin dörrtröskel och solade sig. Tomas gav
sig tid att stanna ett ögonblick och stryka honom över ryggen.

Märta stod i porten till huset vid Döbelnsgatan. Hon var mycket blek,
och hennes ögon hade blivit  stora.

-- Har du väntat? frågade Tomas lågt och med grumlig röst, medan han
famlade efter hennes hand. Hon räckte honom den slutligen och lät honom
