gjorde honom oftast till viljes, ty det var henne en glädje att ha honom

tråkiga och  sin väg. Detta var ett medel att hålla honom kvar; och
hon begagnade det. Hon hade lätt för att tala och hennes skiftande
rörliga lif erbjöd ett outtömligt material till hennes berättelser.

William hade lagt märke till att modern alltid  mycket som möjligt
undgick att blanda in faderns namn och att hon aldrig vidrörde det
ömsesidiga förhållandet mellan dem. Detta väckte hans misstänksamhet och
hans nyfikenhet.

En afton medan hon som vanligt höll konversationen uppe sade han
plötsligt och som det tycktes helt omotiveradt:

»Plågar det dig mycket om jag gör dig frågor angående min farHon teg ett ögonblick, liksom tveksam.

»Nej», sade hon till sist.

»Du drar  det som om det skulle vara dig obehagligt?»
