och oroligt. Hon tänkte  trappuppgången,  rummet. Hon hade vandrat
uppför samma trappor, lagt sin hand  samma dörrlås, hängt sin kappa 
samma knagg. Det kom öfver henne en obeskriflig vämjelse. Hon tänkte sig
dessa kvinnor, som knappt ega en själ och hon kände som ett hånleende
invärtes. Cocott-romantikens magdalenor--nej, hon trodde icke  dem.
Låghet och grofhet och råhet, det var deras kainsmärke. Se bara in i ett
par sådana ögon med röda ådror vid ögonvrårna! Om också det råa skrattet
är fernissadt bort,  återstår dock alltid den sinnets råhet, som
aldrig försvinner, den själens smitta som följer oundviklig som den
fysiska med det lif de lefva.

Hela dagen våndades hon under dessa tankar och när William kom till
henne  kvällen hade lidandet nått en sådan höjd att hon tyckte det
