Zimmermann talade om hur trefligt de hade haft i hvarandras sällskap för
några aftnar sedan, hon och William och herr Hedström och två andra af
Williams vänner.

»Hvarför kom ni icke medfrågade hon till sist.

Den lilla frun rodnade och slog ner ögonen. »Jag fick inte lof för
Karl», sade hon.

»Karl tyckes vara en tyrann», skämtade fru Zimmermann. »Jag skall
minsann lexa upp honom när han kommer.»

»Åhnej, säg ingenting», bad den lilla frun helt förskräckt. »Han--han
är  rädd om mig, och ...»

»Rädd om er? Men der var väl ingen fara  färde. Jag kom åtminstone
alldeles helskinnad derifrån; der var ingen som gjorde ringaste min af
att äta upp mig.--För resten var han ju sjelf med.»

»Ja, det--det är inte det--men--ja, jag vet inte...»

Till all lycka för den unga frun, som våndades under sin förlägenhet,
ringde det nu  klockan och »Karl» ryckte an till undsättning. Samtalet
gled åt annat håll.
