Hon plågades af det falska i deras förhållande, men kunde nu icke kasta
sin mask. Han skulle  åter stirra  henne lika främmande, han skulle
tro att hvarje yttring af känsla var en snara med hvilken hon ville
binda honom; och snigeln skulle draga sig tillbaka i sitt skal.

Detta gjorde henne  mycket mer ondt som hon efterhand hade kommit till
den åsigten, att sonen skulle varit lättare att locka fram ifall hon
strax haft mod att handla i enlighet med sin instinkt och mött honom med
sitt väsens hela värme och ömhet. Han skulle ha ryckt till vid första
beröringen men han skulle slutligen ha insett, att detta var det enda
naturliga sådan hon nu en gång var. I stället hade hon sjelf krympt ihop
för hans ovänlighet; hon hade spelat sin roll  länge att han vant sig
vid den och om hon nu plötsligt lade den af skulle han anse det som
förställning och stöta henne tillbaka.

Hon måste se tiden an, följa hur hans lif utvecklade sig, vänta och
hoppas.

William hade hyrt sig ett par rum vid Drottninggatan, han hade återtagit
sin plats som teateranmälare vid bladet och till och med under de första
dagarne haft energi nog att sätta sig ned och skrifva ett litet
