slag; hon tog en af chäslongens kuddar, tryckte den hårdt mot bröstet

Det skulle vara lönlöst att  till sängs; hon skulle ändå icke kunna
sofva. Hon reste sig upp, tände sin arbetslampa och satte sig till
skrifbordet, med pennan i hand.

Gardinen var icke rullad ner. Hon såg ut öfver den slumrande staden, der
dagens jägtande lif stannat af. I denna heliga djupa tystnad bodde
hennes gud--arbetet; en sådan natt skulle hans son komma till
verlden--den väntade återlösaren.

En känsla af andakt grep henne och med darrande händer började hon dyrka
sin gud.

Natten led. Utanför fönstren började de tidigaste fåglarnes kvitter att
låta höra sig; och lifvet vaknade efterhand.  lade hon pennan ifrån
sig, tog  sig kappa och hatt och gick ut.

Morgonluften lade sig kyligt kring hennes brännheta panna. Öfver
Skeppsholmen höjde sig i mäktigt majestät solens glänsande röda skifva.
Dagen grydde--grydde långsamt öfver stad och land och haf.
