sjelf deröfver: »Man kan vänja sig till det otroligaste», sade han till
henne med en blick som just sade motsatsen och som hon mycket väl
senterade. Hon hade nemligen också hunnit att vänja sig till hans
jargong och hon uppfattade nu allt hvad han sade just  rätta
sättet--»psykologiskt, inte efter orden. Hvem frågar efter orden? Orden
äro till för att dölja tankarne».

Detta gaf William en frihet att tumla sig med paradoxer, som han sjelf
ansåg vara grunden till det välbehag han kände i hennes sällskap. Hon å
sin sida blef också dag efter dag mera intresserad af denna lek med ord,
detta ständiga fäktande, som fick sin spänning deraf att hon aldrig
visste _hvad_ han menade, endast att han _icke_ menade just det, som han
sade. Han hade en vana att taga allt en bagatelle, att tala om allt med
den lätt sarkastiska ton, som intet förrådde af hans egne tankar och
känslor, men lemnade hennes fantasi fritt spelrum.
